Grief to glory

“I needed to change grief into glory and pain into power,” she said. “To transform it into something bearable and something beautiful.”

I stumble on a story about Shamayim Harris, a woman living near Detroit, Michigan. Mama Shu, as she is known, lost a two-year old child and, fourteen years later, a twenty-three-year old child, to neighborhood gun violence.

The story features her inspired transformation of the neighborhood she calls home from ‘blight to bright’ and  ‘vacant to vibrant’.

Triumph shows in colorfully painted buildings and imaginatively conceived spaces including The Homework House, My 3Sunz Basketball Court, Goddess Marketplace … and much more.

Thank you, Mama Shu, for your stunning accomplishments. Thank you for your radiant spirit forged of suffering and hard work. You inspire me to transform the challenges in my own life.
