Spirit speaks

I visit with friends when a single, laser-sharp bird call pierces the outdoors where we gather. Stunned by its raw beauty and bold delivery, we scan our surroundings for a glimpse of the mysterious, unfamiliar messenger.

Who’s there? Why have you come?!

One friend scrambles for his phone and asks Google to identify the feathered guest … name, habitat, diet. As he broadcasts his encyclopedic findings, the enchanted moment quickly collapses, unable to bear the weight of so much rationality.

I respect rationality, but it seldom inspires me or brings me alive. I find meeting what happens without the clutter of concepts and categories leaves more room for experience. Being with what happens more relationally (and less rationally) greens my world.
