Excited, I wake early, eager to break from an ordinary day at the office to attend a conference promising friendly colleagues, interesting speakers and sumptuous food. A quick drive across down brings me to a well-lit auditorium where several hundred other people, like me, gather to learn more about regulatory requirements in health care.
Following the usual welcome and introductions, our first speaker explodes onto the stage with chest out, head high, shoulders back. Brian’s white shirt and red tie provide perfect foil for his peacock-blue suit. Closely clipped hair and polished shoes book-end an immaculate appearance.
Enthusiasm and expertise
Good morning, every one! And thank you! Thank you for your important work as guardians of patient safety and health care excellence. Is it tough work? Yes! Under appreciated work? Yes! But is it necessary work? Yes! More than necessary, absolutely essential!
Having tipped his metaphoric hat, Brian, an attorney, speaks for 90 minutes. His golden tongue, enthusiasm and expertise lift our mostly-clerical work to an entirely new level of knowledge and power. If only for today, we are valued professionals with an astute vision for the future.
As Brian takes his parting bow, applause rises up from the crowd like warmth on a summer evening.
Eye of the beholder
Sometimes I wish I were a Brian, conferred with degrees, distinguished by expertise. My work is not professional nor highly sought. Even so, my job teaches a great deal, providing lessons the celebrated do not always get.
Like seeing and appreciating people who work without recognition. Or learning repetition builds endurance and concentration. And discovering that in bending low, my ego takes a back seat and spiritual doors open.
I am no peacock but I am useful … beautifully so!
