Spirit speaks

I visit with friends when a single, laser-sharp bird call pierces the outdoors where we gather. Stunned by its raw beauty and bold delivery, we scan our surroundings for a glimpse of the mysterious, unfamiliar messenger.

Who are you … where are you from and why are you here?!

One friend scrambles for his phone and asks Google to identify the feathered guest … name, habitat, diet. As he broadcasts his encyclopedic findings, the enchanted moment quickly collapses, unable to bear the weight of so much rationality.

I respect rationality, but it seldom inspires me or brings me alive. I find meeting what happens without the clutter of concepts and categories leaves more room for experience. Being with what happens more relationally (and less rationally) greens my world with significance, connection, and presence.
